Former Edmonton Oiler and recent Ottawa Senator, Jason Smith, announced his retirement from the NHL today–as per TSN. The 35-year-old, Jason Smith, had played in the NHL for 16 years. Among Oilers fans, Smith is regarded as classy player who had excellent leadership qualities.
For the Ottawa Senators, this retirement is somewhat fortuitous as they were in the midst of some salary cap issues. Smith’s level of play had declined from the past and his $2.6 million dollar cap hit coming off the books will give them some breathing room. One can’t help but wonder if the Sens’ cap situation played some role in Smith’s decision to retire–especially since he was still only 35 years old. Either way, Smith’s decision was a classy decision by a player that will be fondly remembered here in Edmonton.
