Mike Comrie signs with the Oil?

Comrie and Oiler?

Comrie an Oiler?

Update Thursday, September 10th, 2009.  Mike Comrie has officially been signed by the Edmonton Oilers for a one-year contract worth $1.125 $1.25 million dollars.

Update:  Friday, September 4, 2009.  Comrie or Nilsson?

Okay, there’s a rumor circulating around the web about Daryl Katz signing Mike Comrie for $1.3 million dollars.  Never mind the past history that the Oilers have had with Mike, but not many think we actually need another small player on our roster.

Wayne Gretz, over at Oilers Nation, wrote about this rumor several hours ago.  When I read his post, I thought that he was joking…  There’s already a post up on Lowetide in response to this rumor.  Does it get and L(1) or L(2) at this point???

“If you buy the Comrie signing (Dan Tencer says it is possible and he’s connected) then it might make sense in a “we signed Comrie and traded for…” scenario since the Oilers need another small forward like they need a hole in the head. And we can probably bring Dany Heatley into the conversation since it’s out there anyway.”

I hate to admit it, but I too try to stay somewhat up-to-date with respect to NHL trade rumors and such.  Lately, there’s been a rumor that if the Edmonton Oilers acquire a new center, that the Heatley deal might still go through.  I wouldn’t put any stock in that at this point, but crazy things do occasionally happen…

Dan Tencer’s twitter:

Oilers have not signed Comrie but I’m led to believe that it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

In terms of his faceoff abilities, Mike Comrie was about 41% last year on the dot.  At this point, this rumor is unconfirmed, but I will provide updates if I come across anything.  Dan Tencer’s twitter is probably the best source for now.

Update:

Hm, I think that this rumor has crashed the servers over at Oilers Nation as I am currently getting a page load error.  Dan Tencer’s just got a coffee at Tim Horton’s, but other than that, I haven’t seen any updates on his twitter account.
Will Mike Comrie really rejoin the Edmonton Oilers?  At this point, it’s looking doubtful as this rumor hasn’t been validated by any credible source yet.

  1. Hm, even Eklund himself hasn’t got in on the action on this trade rumor. Tencer’s twitter’s been dead for hours too. It’s starting to look like a spurious rumor.

  2. Still doesn’t make any sense to me, other than Daryl Katz getting his sticky fingers involved 😉

If that’s not what is happening here, than I see no reason for this rumor to be considered true.

  3. Hey Racki, yeah Oilers Nation is linking this deal to Mr. Katz. Meh? I’m not going to touch the Darly Katz issue with a ten foot pole. Mr. Katz owns the Oilers and he writes the checks. The fact that he owns the team is a very good thing for us Oilers fans. It sounds like there might even be a new arena plan in the works in a better location than Rexall Place. Not that it’s an issue, but the upside of Dary Katz owning the team negates any potential problems from the influence on a Comrie deal.

Comrie on the cheap is a decent gamble in my opinion provided we move one of our other small skilled forwards. At this point, the Comrie deal sounds like a flat out case of how do rumors get started… Some guy tweets the rumor on his twitter and it takes life from there.
