According to TSN, Todd Bertuzzi has been offered a 1-year contract worth $1.5 million dollars to play for the Detroit Red Wings. This deal is apparently pending a physical exam for Bertuzzi. Fans seem polarized in their respective opinions of both Bertuzzi as well as this new deal. On the one hand, many suggest that Bertuzzi is simply a shadow of his old self in terms of his previous level of play as a power-forward. However, he’s still only 34-years-old and even when considering his declining level of play, at $1.5 million it’s hard not to see the value in this signing relative to his price tag. Last year, he posted 15 goals and 29 assists for a total of 44 points in 66 games played for the Calgary Flames.
When some people discuss Todd Bertuzzi, they note his ‘physical presence’ while others lament his ‘stupid penalties.’ Either way, he’s not going to be a Hossa replacement, but he is a legit NHLer even if on the downward slope of his career. The list of UFAs still available is still pretty long. Now, I am not going to suggest that Prospal was the canary in the coal mine in terms of a trend towards cheap, veteran, UFA options, but I am not going to deny it either. I predict that some of these names: Betts, Malhotra, Tanguay, Afinogenov, Comrie, and others may end up signing for less than they expect.
